CHARLES T. PORTER contributes an interesting article on the value of the steam jacket to a recent issue of the American Machinist. Although he has no fresh theories to propound or new truths to enforce with respect to this much-debated question, he contrives to explain some old facts in a simple and intelligible manner that brings them within the grasp of those whose mathematical training does not permit them to enter the region of thermo-dynamics, as the subject is ordinarily treated, and for the benefit of those of our readers who (D come within this category, we have ventured to reproduce it. He says : The question is often asked by disbelievers in the advantage of the steam jacket, and that, too, with an air of triumph, which shows that they think it is a hard one to answer, " How can the jacket save steam, when, in order to prevent condensation in the cylinder, the same weight of steam has to he condensed in the jacket ? " I propose to answer this question, and to show precisely how the jacket operates to prevent loss of steam, and how considerable a saving is effected by it. It is important that the'understanding of this subject he clear and definite. I shall do what I can to make it so. To prevent misconception on the part of anyone, it may be first stated that a jacket has no communication with the interior of the cylinder. The so-called jackets
